Winter Hut Touring and the Winterraum Culture
Winter hut touring in the Alps is a different activity in almost every respect from summer hut travel. The terrain is transformed by snow; the guardians are gone; the routes require navigation by map and compass or GPS rather than paint blazes; and the primary hazard is no longer afternoon thunderstorms but avalanche. The huts exist in winter as Winterraum — basic, unstaffed sleeping spaces that are the overnight infrastructure of ski mountaineering and ski touring culture. This is a serious mountain discipline, not an accessible extension of summer hiking.
The Winterraum
When a staffed alpine hut closes for the winter season — typically between late October and late May, depending on elevation and snowpack — it locks the main building but leaves a smaller wing accessible as a Winterraum. This is a basic dormitory with 6–20 bunks, heavy wool blankets, a wood or gas stove, a sink (sometimes frozen), and sometimes a small stock of emergency provisions left by the last guardian or by previous winter parties.
Access to the Winterraum requires collecting a key from the nearest valley before departure. This is typically arranged through the local alpine club section — ÖAV, DAV, or SAC — by phone or email. Key collection locations vary: a hotel in the village, a club section office, or a key box with a combination provided on booking. Some huts use a universal member key that opens all Winterraum of the managing club; confirm which system applies before setting out.
Do not arrive at a hut in winter expecting a Winterraum to be unlocked. Doing so in poor conditions is the most reliable path to a serious survival situation.
Avalanche transceiver standard
Every member of a winter touring party wears an avalanche transceiver (Avalanche Rescue Beacon, LVS-Gerät) switched to transmit before leaving the valley. Not in the pack — worn on the body, under the first layer, so it remains accessible and cannot be separated from the carrier in a burial. The standard frequency is 457 kHz; all modern transceivers are compatible.
Each party member also carries: a snow probe (240 cm minimum), a collapsible avalanche shovel with a metal blade (not a lightweight plastic camping shovel), and has been trained in organized companion rescue. The 15-minute survival window — after which probability of survival in a burial drops steeply — makes organized companion rescue the only technique that matters. External rescue, regardless of helicopter response times, typically arrives after the window.
The 3×3 Method
The 3×3 method is the standard decision-making framework for avalanche risk assessment in ski touring, developed by Werner Munter and now taught in all major avalanche safety courses (ÖAV, DAV Lawinen-Sicherheits-Training, SNL).
The three scales are: the regional scale (current avalanche danger rating, 1–5 on the European scale), the local scale (specific slope angle, aspect, and elevation zone), and the zonal scale (the individual decision point whether to enter a specific slope).
The European Avalanche Danger Scale: 1 (low), 2 (limited), 3 (considerable), 4 (high), 5 (very high). Scale 3 is where most avalanche accidents occur — the danger is serious but the weather is often good, encouraging parties to proceed. The rule applied by professional mountain guides: at scale 3, significant terrain steeper than 35 degrees is off-limits unless the snowpack stability has been locally verified by digging and testing. At scale 4 or 5: touring is not justifiable.
Classic winter routes
The Haute Route on skis (Chamonix to Zermatt, typically 7 days in April) is the most famous ski touring route in the Alps and uses the same hut chain as the summer Walker's Haute Route — Cabane du Mont Fort, Cabane de Prafleuri, Cabane des Dix, Cabane des Vignettes, Cabane de Bertol, Schönbielhütte — but on skis across terrain that is extensively glaciated and consistently exposed above 3000 m. This route is done entirely in Winterraum or staffed spring conditions (some huts open earlier for the ski touring season). A guide is strongly recommended for the first traverse.
The Ortler Skirunde in South Tyrol (the ski touring circuit of the Ortler group, typically 6–7 days) uses huts in both winter room and spring-staffed configuration. The Ortler (3905 m) is the highest peak in South Tyrol and the circuit's terrain is serious — sustained glacier approaches and exposed ridges are standard throughout.
Shorter circuits in the Bernese Oberland (Lauteraarhorn circuit, Wildhorn crossing), the Silvretta (Silvretta Runde), and the Adamello range provide two-to-four-day winter touring options with established Winterraum chains.
Food provisioning in winter
Most Winterraum are self-service: no guardian, no kitchen, no meals. This means carrying all food for the duration of the tour. The provisioning calculation: approximately 700–900 calories per hour of ski touring activity, for parties moving 5–8 hours per day. Three to four days of food at that caloric density — using freeze-dried meals, nuts, hard cheese, salami, energy bars, and chocolate — typically weighs 1.5–2.5 kg per person.
Some huts leave an honesty box and a small supply of emergency provisions (instant soup, oatmeal, canned goods, tea). These are emergency reserves, not a reliable food source. Carry your full ration regardless.
Stove and gas: a lightweight canister stove (MSR, Primus, Jetboil) plus two 230g canisters per person for three days is the standard load. Cold temperatures reduce canister output — keep the canister warm in a sleeping bag or jacket pocket before use.
Water
Below freezing, spring water is unavailable. Above freezing, running water at a Winterraum may or may not function depending on the specific plumbing. The reliable winter water source is snow. Snow-to-water yield is approximately 10:1 by volume — melting a full 1-litre pot of packed snow produces around 100 ml of water. Plan accordingly and start melting early.
Navigation in winter conditions
Trail blazes are buried under snow. Landscape features — ridgelines, rock outcrops, valley floors — are transformed by a winter snowpack of 1–3 m. Navigation in winter requires: a 1:25,000 or 1:50,000 paper map with annotated waypoints, a compass, a GPS device with the route loaded before departure, and the skill to correlate terrain with map in flat light and whiteout conditions.
The SAC Swisstopo app with offline layers downloaded, or a dedicated GPS device with loaded routes, is the practical tool. Relying on phone GPS without offline maps is not adequate in winter conditions where battery life is halved by cold.
The ski touring guide — when to hire one
Winter glacier touring requires a level of avalanche terrain assessment and navigation competence that is genuinely different from summer hiking. For parties without prior off-piste skiing experience in avalanche terrain, a qualified IFMGA mountain guide is not optional — it is the correct safety provision. The Haute Route on skis is consistently recommended as a guided first experience precisely because the guide provides the avalanche decision- making, the navigation across featureless glacier terrain in cloud, and the technical security on the steep sections before the Cabane des Vignettes and the Schönbiel.
IFMGA guides for winter ski touring are available through the national guide associations: the Bergführerverband (Austria, Germany), Bureau des Guides (France, Chamonix), and the Swiss Mountain Guide Association. For the Haute Route ski traverse, a 7-day engagement with a guide for a party of 2–3 typically costs CHF 3,000–4,500 for the guide's fee, with hut costs additional.
Self-guided winter touring at the appropriate level — two-day circuits in the Silvretta, three-day Bernese Oberland crossings for experienced ski tourers — is a reasonable objective for parties who have completed an avalanche training course (ÖAV or DAV LST level 1) and have experience on off-piste and touring terrain below 35 degrees.
Ski touring gear and the Winterraum overnight
The gear requirements for a winter Winterraum stay are substantially greater than for a summer staffed hut night. A 0-degree sleeping bag (compressed to a manageable volume in a -5 degrees Celsius dormitory) is the minimum; a -10 degree bag provides meaningful comfort margin. The heavy wool blankets provided in most Winterraum supplement but do not replace a good bag.
Heating a Winterraum typically requires finding, chopping (if a wood supply is stacked outside), and managing a wood stove over several hours. The hut is rarely warm on arrival — plan on an hour of stove management before the interior temperature becomes comfortable. Some huts have gas heaters with cartridge supply left by the guardian; confirm this before departure.
Finding winter-capable huts
The map distinguishes between huts with confirmed winter room access and those that are fully closed in winter. Filter for winter use before planning a tour. Contact the managing alpine club section — SAC, ÖAV, or DAV — to confirm key collection logistics and current Winterraum condition before departure.
