Capanna Margherita: Europe's Highest Alpine Hut
There is a refuge at 4554 metres above sea level. It stands on the summit of Punta Gnifetti, one of the peaks of the Monte Rosa massif, in a position that is not approached on a well-trodden valley path but climbed — fully roped, on crampons, through glacier terrain and a final steep snow face — from the glacier huts below. The Rifugio Capanna Regina Margherita is not a destination for hut walkers. It is a mountaineering objective in its own right, and for most visitors, the hardest night's sleep they will ever attempt.
History and name
The hut was inaugurated in 1893, named after Queen Margherita of Italy (Margherita di Savoia), who made the ascent to Punta Gnifetti the same year and spent the night there — making her one of the first women to sleep above 4000 m in the Alps. The original stone building has been rebuilt and extended several times; the current structure combines the historic shell with modern insulated additions that maintain habitability in extreme conditions.
Operation by the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI) has been continuous since 1893, making the Rifugio Capanna Regina Margherita one of the oldest continuously operated mountain huts in the Alps. The CAI Valle d'Aosta section manages it today.
Getting there
The standard ascent begins at Punta Indren (3260 m), reached by cable car from Alagna Valsesia on the Italian side. From there, the route traverses the Indren Glacier, climbs to the Rifugio Quintino Sella al Felik (3585 m) or the Rifugio Capanna Giovanni Gnifetti (3647 m) — both of which serve as intermediate staging huts — and continues via the Lys Glacier and Colle del Lys to the final steep approach to Punta Gnifetti.
The total climbing time from Punta Indren is 7–9 hours for a fit party; most people break the ascent over two days with an overnight at the Rifugio Gnifetti or the Rifugio Quintino Sella. This staged approach also provides partial acclimatisation, though the altitude gain from Alagna to the Margherita is still rapid enough to produce AMS symptoms in many visitors regardless.
From the Swiss side via Zermatt or Saas Fee, the approach is longer and involves crossing the Monte Rosa massif from the west, typically via the Neue Monte Rosa Hütte (2883 m) and the Colle del Lys. SAC members using this approach can split the ascent across two huts before arriving at the summit.
The overnight at 4554 m
Sleeping at 4554 m is physiologically challenging even for acclimatised alpinists. The atmospheric oxygen at this altitude is approximately 58 percent of sea-level concentration. Most guests experience disrupted sleep, frequent waking, headache, and reduced appetite. Cheyne-Stokes respiration — the cyclical deep-and-shallow breathing pattern common above 4000 m — makes uninterrupted sleep rare.
The hut accommodates approximately 70 guests in dormitory sleeping. The building is heated and meals are provided, but the kitchen operates under the constraints of extreme altitude and helicopter-only supply. Dinner is typically a simple hot meal; the emphasis is on caloric density rather than culinary refinement.
The guardians of the Rifugio Capanna Regina Margherita are accustomed to guests in various states of altitude-related distress. The hut maintains an oxygen supply and a first-aid kit appropriate for high-altitude medicine. HACE and HAPE both develop at this altitude, and the descent to lower elevation takes several hours even under best conditions.
The summit panorama
From Punta Gnifetti (4554 m), the panorama takes in the highest peaks of the Alps: Dufourspitze (4634 m) immediately to the west, Dom (4545 m), Weisshorn (4506 m), Matterhorn (4478 m), Monte Cervino, Grand Combin, Mont Blanc (4808 m) on the far western horizon. In perfect conditions, the Bernese Oberland and Bernina ranges are also visible.
The view from the Capanna Margherita is the broadest high-altitude panorama available from a fixed overnight structure anywhere in Europe.
Scientific use
The hut has housed high-altitude scientific research since its establishment. The Margherita Scientific Research Station, co-managed by CAI and the National Research Council of Italy (CNR), operates instruments for meteorology, atmospheric chemistry, and astrophysics. Glaciologists have used the site to study Monte Rosa glacier mass balance for decades.
Practical preparation
The physiological challenge of sleeping at 4554 m requires serious preparation. Parties attempting the Margherita without prior high-altitude exposure should plan at least one or two nights at 3000–3500 m (the Rifugio Gnifetti or the Monte Rosa Hut are appropriate acclimatisation stops) before the summit push. The standard recommended acclimatisation schedule: arrive at Alagna, spend night 1 at the valley (1191 m), night 2 at the Gnifetti (3647 m) or Quintino Sella (3585 m), night 3 at the Margherita (4554 m). This three-night ascent is faster than ideal but approximately what most guided parties achieve.
Diamox (acetazolamide) at 125–250 mg twice daily is commonly used by parties ascending to this elevation; it accelerates acclimatisation but does not replace the physiological process. Guests who develop HACE or HAPE symptoms must descend immediately regardless of weather; the guardians maintain oxygen and have emergency protocols, but the descent route to the Gnifetti takes several hours even in good conditions.
Weather at 4554 m is extreme by any standard. Wind speeds exceeding 100 km/h have been recorded at the Margherita; temperatures below -30°C occur in winter and can approach -20°C in August storms. The summer window (July–August) is the only practical time for a non-expedition visit; even within this window, the average summit conditions are cold, windy, and frequently cloudy.
The view
When conditions are clear — which happens on a meaningful number of summer days — the view from Punta Gnifetti is the broadest in the Alps accessible from a fixed overnight structure. The list of visible summits on a perfect day is extraordinary: Monte Rosa itself in all its constituent peaks, Lyskamm, Matterhorn (4478 m), Dent Blanche (4357 m), Grand Combin (4314 m), Weisshorn (4506 m), Dom (4545 m), Bernese Oberland peaks, Mont Blanc (4808 m) far to the west. In exceptional conditions, the Apennines and the Mediterranean have been reported visible from the south.
The research station
The Capanna Margherita houses the highest permanent meteorological and atmospheric research station in Europe. The observatory, operated by the Fondazione Sella and scientific institutions including the Italian National Research Council (CNR), monitors long-term atmospheric conditions, UV radiation, cosmic ray flux, and pollution tracers at 4554 m. Data collected since 1893 provides one of the longest continuous high-altitude atmospheric records in the world.
The research has documented the decline of the Grenzgletscher and Gornergletscher below as a climate indicator, and monitors ozone column variations above the Alps. Scientists rotating through the station typically stay for 2–4 week periods; the guardians and researchers share the building throughout the summer season.
For visitors, the research context adds a dimension to the overnight that goes beyond the standard hut experience: this building exists not only for mountain tourism but for science, and has done so continuously for over a century. The instruments and monitoring equipment are visible in the building exterior and available for viewing when the scientists are present.
Booking and access
The Capanna Margherita is managed by CAI Varallo (the Club Alpino Italiano section that has operated the hut since its construction). Reservations are essential in July and August; capacity is 70 people in a combination of dormitories. The guardian's schedule runs from approximately late June to early September. Off-season access in the self-service winter room is possible for experienced mountaineers with appropriate acclimatisation.
