Top 10 Alpine Huts in Switzerland
The Swiss Alpine Club (SAC/CAS) operates over 150 huts across the Swiss Alps, ranging from low valley huts accessible on a short walk to glacier outposts at nearly 4000 m. The standard of construction and maintenance is consistently high — solar panels, composting toilets, and rainwater collection are now standard in newly built or renovated huts. The ten below represent the most significant overnight positions in the country, and all are plotted on the map.
1. Hörnlihütte, 3260 m — Matterhorn, Wallis
The base hut for the Hörnli Ridge — the normal route on the Matterhorn (4478 m) — sits at 3260 m above Zermatt, reached either on foot from Schwarzsee or by cable car to 2583 m and then a 1.5-hour approach. Capacity around 170. The hut belongs to the Zermatt section of the SAC and is one of the most famous mountain huts in the world. The Hörnli Ridge above is a serious alpine route requiring a guide for most parties — the difficulty is Grade AD with sustained exposed rock and frequent crowding. Book months in advance; July and August dates go in spring.
2. Monte Rosa Hut, 2883 m — Monte Rosa massif, Wallis
The architecturally celebrated Monte Rosa Hut — a solar-powered, self-sufficient structure completed in 2009 — sits at 2883 m on the Gorner Glacier above Zermatt, reached in 5–6 hours from Rotenboden via the Gorner Glacier (crampons and rope required). Capacity around 120. The hut serves as base for the Monte Rosa massif including Dufourspitze (4634 m — the highest point in Switzerland) and Nordend. The SAC Monte Rosa Hut is a design landmark as well as a serious mountaineering base.
3. Cabane du Trient, 3170 m — Trient Plateau, Valais
On the Trient Plateau above Champex-Lac in the southwestern Valais, the Trient is a key overnight on the Haute Route (Chamonix to Zermatt) and a staging point for routes on the Grand Combin (4314 m) group. Reached from Champex in about 4 hours via the Bois Median or the Fenêtre d'Arpette (a demanding pass). The plateau approach is on glacier; crampons and rope are standard. Capacity around 100. SAC/CAS-managed with full half-board.
4. Cabane des Vignettes, 3160 m — Arolla, Valais
The most dramatic position of any hut on the Haute Route — perched on a rock island surrounded by the Pigne d'Arolla and Otemma glaciers at 3160 m. Reached from Arolla in about 3.5 hours. Capacity around 100. Routes from here cover the Pigne d'Arolla (3796 m) and the glacier crossing toward Cabane de Bertol and Zermatt. 5. Cabane Bertol, 3311 m — Bertol Ridge, Valais
Reached by a dramatic ladder and chain system from the Bertol col, the Bertol hut is one of the few in the Alps that requires short technical climbing on the approach regardless of the season. At 3311 m it commands the connection between the Arolla glacier system and the Zermatt-facing Schönbiel glaciers. Part of the standard Haute Route. Capacity around 80. The early-morning departure for the Tête Blanche crossing toward the Schönbiel involves glacier travel that is best done before solar warming softens the snow — departures at 05:00 are normal.
6. Britanniahütte, 3030 m — Saas Fee, Valais
Above Saas Fee on the Hinter Allalin glacier, reached by cable car from Saas Fee to the Felskinn station and then a 30-minute walk. At 3030 m with easy cable-car access, the Britanniahütte is among the best acclimatization nights in the Alps for parties preparing for higher objectives. Capacity around 120. The surrounding peaks — Allalinhorn (4027 m), Strahlhorn (4190 m), and Rimpfischhorn (4199 m) — are achievable from here in single days for fit, roped parties. Full SAC half-board service.
7. Glecksteinhütte, 2317 m — Upper Grindelwald, Bernese Oberland
On the moraine above the Upper Grindelwald Glacier with a direct view of the Wetterhorn (3692 m) east face, the Glecksteinhütte is one of the finest positioned SAC huts in the Bernese Oberland. Reached from Grindelwald in 3–4 hours via the Gletscherschlucht gorge trail. Capacity around 90. The upper Glecksteinhütte sits at the base of Wetterhorn routes and on the approach to the Lauteraarhorn. The lower glacier approach has changed significantly with glacial retreat — follow current route markers.
8. Cabane de l'Anenhütte, 2358 m — Lötschental, Valais
In the Lötschental — one of the last traditional high valleys of the Valais — the Anenhütte serves the Lötschental Traverse and the approach to the Bietschihorn (3934 m). The Lötschental has a distinct cultural character: the Tschäggättä carnival masks, the isolated Baroque churches, and the sense of a valley that retained its mountain culture longer than most. Capacity around 60. Reached from Blatten in about 3 hours.
9. Cabane du Mountet, 2886 m — Val d'Anniviers, Valais
In the Val d'Anniviers above Zinal, the Mountet serves the approach to the Zinalrothorn (4221 m) and the long ridge traverse to the Weisshorn (4506 m) — one of the great routes in the Alps. Reached from Zinal in 3.5 hours. Capacity around 120. The view from the hut terrace across the Mountet glacier to the Obergabelhorn, Zinalrothorn, and Weisshorn constitutes one of the finest mountain panoramas accessible on foot in the Alps.
10. Weissmies Hut (Hohsaashütte), 3100 m — Saas Grund, Valais
Above the Triftbach valley near Saas Almagell, serving as base camp for the Weissmies (4017 m) and Lagginhorn (4010 m) — two of the more approachable 4000 m peaks in the Valais, and commonly done as a roped-but-accessible introduction to high-alpine objectives. The Hohsaashütte is reached via cable car to the Kreuzboden (2397 m) and a 1.5-hour walk. Capacity around 90.
Booking Swiss SAC huts
All SAC huts are bookable through the sac-cas.ch reservation system. SAC membership is CHF 105–170 annually depending on category and entitles the holder to discounted overnight rates at all affiliated huts, plus reciprocal discounts across UIAA member club huts throughout the Alps.
The Zermatt hut cluster
The huts above Zermatt constitute the finest concentration of high-altitude SAC huts in a single valley. Within a 15-kilometre radius of Zermatt's main cable car, a walker with adequate mountain experience can sleep at the Hörnlihütte (3260 m), the Monte Rosa Hut (2883 m), the Cabane des Vignettes (3160 m), the Cabane de Bertol (3311 m), and the Schönbielhütte (2694 m). Each serves a different objective — Matterhorn, Monte Rosa, Pigne d'Arolla, Haute Route, Zmutt ridge — and the cluster makes multi-day routes in every direction possible without returning to the valley.
The Cabane du Mountet (2886 m) in the Val d'Anniviers, 25 km west of Zermatt, extends this network toward the Weisshorn (4506 m). A circuit combining the Mountet, the Vignettes, and the Bertol — moving through the full Pennine Alps hut chain — is one of the more ambitious multi-day objectives in Swiss hut travel and requires glacier competence throughout.
Bernese Oberland alternatives
The Bernese Oberland huts — Glecksteinhütte, the Lauteraarhorn area huts, and the Lötschental huts including the Anenhütte — offer a quieter alternative to the Zermatt circuit. The Bernese Oberland peaks (Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau, Finsteraarhorn, Aletschhorn) are at least as impressive as the Pennine Alps 4000ers, but the hut network is thinner and some approaches are more demanding. The reward is genuine wilderness without the Zermatt tourist infrastructure.
The Finsteraarhornhütte (3048 m) above the Fieschergletscher is the benchmark high hut in the Bernese Oberland — a long approach, a demanding glacier crossing, and a summit within reach that few parties achieve. This is Swiss high-alpine hut travel at its most serious and most rewarding.
